Things You Need to Know

Volunteers are an essential part of our organization. Volunteers contribute their skills and talents to our agency to provide the best possible services to our clients. We believe volunteers are a valuable and necessary resource and we strive to recognize their commitment.

Volunteer opportunities are available at OAR's Central Office (Downtown Richmond), Chesterfield County Jail, Henrico County Regional Jail (New Kent County), Henrico County Jail, Pamunkey Regional Jail (Hanover County), Petersburg City Jail Annex, and Richmond City Jail.  OAR Volunteer Brochure

Volunteer Program: Step-by-Step
  • Volunteers fill out a volunteer application form and submit it to the Community Resources Coordinator at the Central Office.
  • Volunteers are then invited to an interview with either the Community Resources Coordinator to determine their areas of interest and compatibility with programs and locations.
  • Volunteers who are accepted into the program fill out security clearance paperwork for their specific jail facility at the interview with the Community Resources Coordinator.
  • The Community Resources Coordinator then submits the clearance paperwork to the specific jail facility.
  • Documents are then processed at the appropriate jail and reference checks are conducted.
  • If the applicants receive jail security clearance, they continue on to the next step. If the security clearance is denied, OAR staff will notify the applicant and explore other possibilities for volunteering at OAR.
  • Volunteers are contacted by the Community Resources Coordinator to schedule their jail security orientation.
  • Once accepted into the program, volunteers must attend an OAR training session to review policies and procedures and learn more about the volunteer program.
  • OAR case managers at the jails will pre-screen inmates for the volunteer facilitated classes or other activities.
  • Times and days are set and the volunteers begin their service.
  • Volunteers must turn in an Individual Time and Activities Report once per month.
  • Volunteers are supervised and evaluated yearly by the Community Resources Coordinator.
