Fall 2005 Did You Know…? During the last fiscal year OAR served 4,394 clients at six jail sites and two post-release offices. The total number of clients served included an almost equal distribution of clients who were new to OAR during the fiscal year and “continuing” clients who had also received services during the previous fiscal year. During intake interviews with new clients, the following significant information was reported: 75% were unemployed before their incarceration or upon their release 26% were homeless or had been homeless prior to their incarceration 56% reported a history of substance abuse 31% lacked a high school education or GED 43% were parents of minor children Client Services Highlights for FY 05Ø 1,021 received job search assistance Ø 1,532 attended educational/support groups and job readiness classes Ø 1,893 received transportation assistance Ø 1,034 received emergency assistance such as food, clothing, medications Ø 702 received identification documents Ø 217 received housing assistance Ø 361 full-time jobs were obtained Ø 187 received work boots, tools, or clothing required by their employers We cannot address our clients’ service needs alone. We need, and value, the support of others in our community--social services organizations, churches, businesses, local governments, and individuals. Volunteer News From July, 2004 through June, 2005, 61 community volunteers provided 2,319 hours and 44 inmate volunteers provided 364 hours of their time providing direct services to OAR clients. They served as group facilitators, individual mentors, and tutors. We would like to welcome the following new volunteers: Ryan Ally, Joel Basco, Juanita Cole, Christy Dahlkemper, Bryan McCarter, Anne Larkum, Shawn O’Hern, Yumi Rydlun, Nicole Simmons, Dena Sloane, Diane Wood, Gloria Woolfolk, and Gary Zientek. Get to Know an OAR Volunteer… Ralph Harris joined OAR as a volunteer in July, 2005. He assists clients each Thursday morning in our Central Office with preparing resumes for their job search. Ralph is so dedicated to helping them in their efforts that, if necessary, he takes their draft resumes home and types them in his spare time. In addition to the resume workshops, beginning in mid October, Ralph will teach a computer class on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This will offer a much needed and requested basic computer class for clients who are working and unable to attend the computer classes OAR offered during the day. Ralph's passion for helping people in need has made him a tremendous addition to OAR's volunteer program.
